Latest NewsField Day This Weekend!
Owensboro Amateur Radio Club members and other Daviess County hams will join thousands of Amateur Radio operators who will be showing off their emergency capabilities this weekend. From 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 22 through 1:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Daviess County ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about. The club will conduct its 24-hour participation in the American Radio Relay League's Field Day from the Pioneer Village at Yellow Creek Park where it will operate separate stations for phone (voice), CW (Morse Code), and various digital modes. Walter Shipman, KI4OYH, is the local chairman for the event and will be coordinating the club's activities this weekend. OARC members will start setting up antennas on Friday afternoon in preparation for the event and will meet at a local restaurant (to be announced) at 1:00 p.m. before proceeding to the park. Members that are available to assist with the setup on Friday should contact Walt Shipman or Bob Spears. All club members, regardless of license class, will have an opportunity to get on the air and participate in the event on Saturday and Sunday. Members of the general public are welcome and encouraged to visit the site at Yellow Creek Park on Saturday and Sunday to learn more about Amateur Radio and how it serves the community and country in times of emergency as well as its being a fascinating hobby with over 700,000 licensees in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million licensed operators around the world. The club's repeater operating with the call sign K4HY on 147.210 MHz will be off the air for two to three weeks while it is being rehabbed and moved to a new location. Repeater trustee Jim Hunt said that a tentative new site has already been chosen which should give the repeater greater range and easier accessibility for service. A few more tests need to be completed on the new site before the transition is finalized. OARC VE Team To Offer Monthly Tests
OARC team leader for the ARRL/VEC, Steve Morgan, W4NHO, announced that he has arranged with the Owensboro Museum of Science and History, 122 E 2nd St, Owensboro, to hold exam sessions on the fourth Saturday of each month starting on June 29. Testing will be conducted in the meeting room on the third floor of the museum, and an elevator is available for easy access. Registration to take an exam will begin at 10:00 a.m. with testing to start at 10:30 a.m. |
